Why the Class Matters
High-visibility apparel in the US is rated under the ANSI/ISEA 107 standard. The class depends on how much fluorescent background material and reflective tape a garment has, which determines how visible the wearer is. Your job site or contract usually specifies the class, so check that first.
The Classes in Plain Language
- Class 1: The least material. For low-traffic areas well away from moving vehicles, such as warehouses or parking attendants in slow lots.
- Class 2: The most common for road and construction work near traffic. More fluorescent background and reflective tape than Class 1. Most hi-vis t-shirts and vests sold for crews are Class 2.
- Class 3: The most coverage, including sleeves. For high-speed traffic, poor weather, or nighttime work.
You'll also see Type R (roadway) and Type O (off-road) on labels. Type R is the usual requirement for work on or near public roads.
Adding Your Logo the Right Way
A logo is printed on top of the fluorescent fabric, so it covers some of the material the rating depends on. To keep the garment compliant:
- Never print over the reflective tape.
- Keep logos a reasonable size. A left-chest logo and a modest back print are standard. A design covering most of the back can drop a garment below its class.
- Start from a certified garment. Decoration doesn't make a non-rated shirt compliant.
- When in doubt, check with your safety officer or the contract spec.
Printing vs. Embroidery on Hi-Vis
Printing (usually DTF or screen print) is the standard for hi-vis. It's light, it doesn't add weight to a mesh vest, and it keeps colors sharp on fluorescent yellow and orange. Embroidery is less common on hi-vis because it adds weight and stiffness.
Built for Arizona Work
For crews working in Phoenix-area heat, lightweight moisture-wicking hi-vis tees are popular in summer, with vests over regular shirts the rest of the year.
