Quantity Is the Deciding Factor

Screen printing and DTF (direct to film) both produce durable prints. The difference is how the cost is built:

  • Screen printing has setup work for every ink color in every print location: a screen is made for each one. Once the screens exist, each additional shirt is fast and inexpensive. That setup is spread across the order, so screen printing gets cheaper per shirt as quantity goes up.
  • DTF has almost no setup. Your design is printed onto film in full color and heat-pressed onto the garment. The cost per shirt stays fairly flat whether you order 12 or 100.

So the question is simple: is the order big enough to spread out the screen setup?

A Quick Guide by Quantity

Pieces per design What usually makes sense Why
12 DTF Screen setup would be spread over too few shirts
24 DTF Same reason, especially with more than one color or location
48 DTF, or screen print for a 1-color design Simple 1-color art starts to favor screens
96 and up Screen printing Setup is spread thin, and the per-shirt cost drops

This is a starting point, not a rule. The number of colors and print locations moves the line.

Colors and Locations Move the Line

  • More ink colors = more screens. A 4-color logo needs four screens per location. DTF prints unlimited colors, gradients, and photos at no extra setup.
  • More locations = more setups. Front, back, and a sleeve is three screen setups but only three transfers with DTF.
  • Several shirt colors with the same logo can change the ink plan for screen printing (for example, a white underbase on dark shirts).

Does One Look or Last Better?

Both hold up to normal washing. Screen printing gives the softest feel on large solid areas and the most vivid spot colors. DTF handles fine detail, gradients, and full-color art that would be impractical to screen print. For small logos, most people can't tell the difference.
